PLC的可靠性很高且本身有很完善的自診斷功能，如果PLC出現(xiàn)故障，借助自診斷程序可以方便地找到故障的原因，排除后就可以恢復正常工作。

大量的工程實踐表明，PLC外部輸入、輸出設(shè)備的故障率遠遠高于PLC本身的故障率，而這些設(shè)備出現(xiàn)故障后，PLC一般不能覺察出來，可能使故障擴大，直至強電保護裝置動作后才停機，有時甚至會造成設(shè)備和人身事故。停機后，查找故障也要花費很多時間。為了及時發(fā)現(xiàn)故障，在沒有釀成事故之前使PLC自動停機和報警，也為了方便查找故障，提高維修效率，可用PLC程序?qū)崿F(xiàn)故障的自診斷和自處理。
